Garage Liability Insurance
Some work environments are inherently more dangerous than others. Where heavy equipment or dangerous substances are involved, there is always the potential that someone may get hurt on the job. This is why it is important for these types of businesses to carry a good liability insurance policy.
One environment that has a potential for heavy loss is a garage. Garage liability insurance covers many of the accidents that may happen on the premises and will be discussed in further detail below. The term “garage” can indicate an auto service station or repair shop, but it can also include parking garages and other car housing facilities.
There are many things that may be covered in garage liability insurance. It can be confusing, especially because there are separate types of insurance that can be included in a policy, purchased together, but still under a separate contract. Garage keeper’s insurance, for example, has separate provisions than garage liability, but because they are generally combined, for the purposes of this article we will discuss what is included in both under the umbrella of garage liability insurance.
First of all, cars are expensive, and anywhere they are housed should have insurance in case damage should be done to the cars, resulting in a very expensive loss. Different policies will offer different coverage, from client owned automobiles to company cars and rental cars. Damage to these cars due to operations that are “necessary and incidental” to the garage works will be covered by the insurance.
Of course there is room for interpretation about what exactly is necessary and incidental, so it is important that all employees act responsibly and don’t do anything that would create unnecessary risk. They should be well trained in using equipment and only do what is necessary in the garage to avoid accidents.
There are also the regular types of liabilities that most businesses have. These would include accidents on the premises involving property of the garage. It also includes any possible wrong-doing by the owner or management in terms of discrimination or other hiring mistakes.
It is important to get the right type of coverage so you don’t find yourself surprised if a claim should be made and your policy does not cover it. Look carefully into what is included in the policy you are considering. Ask advice from the insurance agent and determine what your risks are and what amount of insurance you need.
Find out exactly what you are getting and know how to file a claim in case of an incident. You want to feel confident that you are running a safe garage, but you also need to be prepared for accidents and know how to deal with them and work with the insurance company to resolve the matter the best way possible.
